A Hidden Gem Worth Crossing the Bridge For
There's something magical about discovering a restaurant that feels like a well-kept secret, and Restaurant Mare in the Bifora Heritage Hotel is exactly that. Tucked away on Čiovo island, just a leisurely five-minute stroll from Trogir's UNESCO-listed old town, this intimate spot has quickly become one of my favorite dining destinations on the Dalmatian coast.
Where History Meets Modern Gastronomy
The setting alone is worth the visit. Housed in a beautifully restored 14th-century building, the restaurant seamlessly blends historic stone architecture with contemporary elegance. During my last visit, I was enchanted by the intimate stone patio—a perfect retreat from the summer crowds, where the warm evening air and soft lighting create an atmosphere of pure romance and relaxation.
The Food: Precise, Fresh, Unforgettable
Chef Robert Predag Zmire has created something special here. His contemporary approach to Dalmatian cuisine showcases impeccable technique while letting quality ingredients shine. Fish is undoubtedly the star of the menu, prepared with precision and creativity that elevates traditional flavors. That said, meat lovers and vegans won't feel overlooked—there's something thoughtfully crafted for everyone.
The Details That Matter
I was particularly impressed by the wine selection. While not overwhelming in size, every bottle has been chosen with care, featuring excellent Croatian labels at fair prices. The option to enjoy several wines by the glass made exploring local varieties a delight.
If you're seeking an authentic, slightly off-the-beaten-path dining experience near Trogir, Restaurant Mare delivers beautifully. It's the kind of place where you'll want to linger over every course.
