Trogir Old Town
Some places impress you because they're huge. Trogir does the exact opposite. Its entire historic center fits on a tiny island, yet within these stone walls I discovered more than two thousand years of history, magnificent architecture, hidden monasteries, medieval fortifications, and one of the most enchanting waterfronts I've ever wandered along the Dalmatian coast.
The moment I crossed the modern pedestrian bridge into the old town, I understood why this place earned its UNESCO World Heritage status. Medieval stone houses rise above the water, the bell tower of St. Lawrence Cathedral dominates the skyline, and Kamerlengo Fortress watches over the western edge like a silent guardian. Every narrow limestone alley reveals another archway, another tiny square, another carved doorway leading somewhere unexpected. My best advice? Take a random turn down the narrowest alley you can find — that's where Trogir's real charm lives.
The main square alone showcases nearly every architectural style that shaped the Adriatic — Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque influences standing side by side. But what surprised me most was how the town transforms after sunset. The crowds thin, ancient stone walls glow under warm lights, and those narrow streets that felt busy during the day become almost magical. And don't leave without crossing over to nearby Čiovo Island — some of the area's most beautiful beaches are literally just across the bridge.
