Pučišća, Brac Island
There are places that simply take your breath away the moment you arrive — and Pučišća is undeniably one of them. Nestled at the end of a deep, fjord-like inlet on the northern coast of Brač Island, this small stone-carving town completely stole my heart the first time I visited. I found myself wandering its narrow streets, running my fingers along the luminous white facades, and wondering how a place this beautiful could remain so wonderfully unspoiled.
Pučišća is often called the "white town" because nearly everything here — from the elegant villas to the humble fishermen's cottages — is built from the famous Brač stone. This is the same brilliant white limestone that graces the White House in Washington and Diocletian's Palace in Split. Walking through the village feels like stepping into a living sculpture, where centuries of masonry tradition continue to this day.
What to See & Do in Pučišća
🪨 Stonemasonry School (Klesarska škola) — One of the last of its kind in Europe, where you can watch young artisans learning this ancient craft and even try your hand at carving.
🏛️ Parish Church of St. Jerome — A beautiful Renaissance church adorned with stone reliefs crafted by local masters over generations.
⛵ The Harbor Promenade — Perfect for an evening stroll, lined with traditional konobas serving fresh seafood and local wine.
🌅 Sunset Views from the Inlet — The way the golden light plays off the white stone buildings reflecting in the calm water is absolutely magical.
🏖️ Nearby Pebble Beaches — Crystal-clear Adriatic waters await just a short walk from the village center.
⛰️ Hiking Trails into the Island Interior — Explore olive groves, pine forests, and dramatic coastal views on paths winding through the Dalmatian landscape.
What I loved most about Pučišća was its authenticity. This isn't a place overrun by souvenir shops or crowded tour buses. It's a working village where the rhythm of life has remained largely unchanged for centuries — fishermen mending nets, stonemasons chipping away at blocks of marble, grandmothers chatting on doorsteps.
If you're searching for the Croatia that exists beyond the postcards — quieter, deeper, and infinitely more rewarding — Pučišća is waiting for you. Trust me, you'll leave a little piece of your heart among those white stone walls.
