Kaštelina Fortress on Vir Island — Croatia's Hidden Coastal Heritage
🏰 Discover Kaštelina fortress, a remarkable 16th-century defensive stronghold perched on Cape Kozjak on the island of Vir. Built to protect against the Uskoks and Ottoman Turks, this historic refuge once sheltered the people of Vir and the nearby Nin area during times of danger.
Throughout the turbulent 1500s, similar fortified shelters dotted the Dalmatian coastline, offering safe haven where locals could retreat with their goods and livestock. These defensive structures often grew around existing medieval castles — sometimes fortified with temporary wooden constructions, other times enclosed by substantial stone walls large enough to shelter entire communities. Many of these refuges eventually became the birthplace of small coastal towns across Dalmatia.
