Church of St. Nicholas in Nin — Croatia's Ancient Royal Coronation Site
A recognizable symbol of Nin, the Church of St. Nicholas stands proudly in the field of Prahulje — a place where Croatian kings once rode to be crowned. According to tradition, seven rulers of the Croatian dynasty received their crowns in Nin, and each newly crowned king would ride horseback to this very church to be presented to the people through a powerful symbolic ritual: standing on the mound, he would cut the four corners of the world with his sword. ⚔️
This small but magnificent church is built on an earthen mound rising above the wide Dalmatian field — an absolutely breathtaking spot for an unforgettable sunset. 🌅 Due to the Ottoman threat in the 16th-17th century, a defensive crown with 8 battlements was added, which also served as a watchtower. Today, the Church of Saint Nicholas remains the only preserved example of early-Romanesque architecture of this form in Dalmatia, dating from the late 11th to early 12th century. Entrance is free of charge.
