Split: Why One Day Is Never Enough

Most visitors give Split a single day, and I get it. The cruise ships dock, the crowds swirl through the palace, and by evening everyone is gone. But the first time I stayed longer, I realised how much I would have missed. Split is not a quick photo stop. It is a living city built inside a Roman emperor's home, surrounded by islands, beaches, fortresses and ancient ruins.

I always start inside Diocletian's Palace. I wander through its four gates and pause on the Peristyle, where locals sip coffee between columns that are nearly two thousand years old. Then I visit the cathedral and climb its bell tower, and afterwards I cool off in the cellars below. Not every ticket is worth it, so choose what speaks to you. For me, the bell tower view over the red rooftops never gets old. When I need green space, I climb Marjan hill. Then I make my way along the coast, from quiet Kašjuni to lively Žnjan and Stobreč.

Split is also the gateway to the islands. Ferries and catamarans connect the city with Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis, so island-hopping is easy even on a short trip. Beyond the city there is even more to see. You can explore ancient Salona, the Jadro spring, dramatic Klis Fortress and the Mosor observatory. Head east to Podstrana and Omiš, or west to the seven Kaštela and Trogir. My honest tip is to consider staying in Podstrana, Stobreč or Kaštela, which can be much cheaper than sleeping in the centre.

The city is changing fast, too. A new promenade, the Kozjak tunnel, a bridge across Kaštela Bay, a marina and an aquarium are all taking shape. And when the sun goes down, Split comes alive. The evening starts in bars tucked into the palace walls and carries on in the clubs. Every summer it builds up to the Ultra Europe festival.
