Šibenik's St. Michael's Fortress — Croatia's Most Stunning Medieval Views
St. Michael's Fortress rises majestically on a steep, rocky hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the countless islands dotting the Šibenik archipelago and the enchanting medieval town below.
Throughout its turbulent history, this fortress served as the heart of the city's fortification system. Šibenik, the oldest autochthonous Croatian town on the Adriatic, grew within its protective walls and was first mentioned on Christmas Day of 1066 — the very place where Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV once stayed. Most of the preserved ramparts and bastions date from the late Middle Ages and Early Modern Age, standing as silent witnesses to centuries of history. Beautifully revitalized in 2014, the fortress now hosts a unique open-air summer stage where culture meets ancient stone.
