Kopački Rit Nature Park

Hidden in the natural triangle where the Danube meets the Drava in eastern Croatia's Baranja region, Kopački Rit is a magical world that feels completely untouched by time. This extraordinary wetland is one of the largest fluvial floodplains in all of Europe, covering more than 23,000 hectares of ever-changing landscapes shaped by water. I was absolutely mesmerized by how the lakes, channels, and flooded forests create living mosaics that transform with each visit.

What makes this place truly special is its remarkable biodiversity — more than 2,700 species call this wetland home. The zoological reserve at its heart is the most precious part, protecting rare birds and wildlife in their natural habitat. Kopačevo Lake, the park's largest, sometimes takes the shape of a heart, earning Kopački Rit the lovely nickname "heart of the Danube area."

This isn't just any swamp — it's been recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1993 and became part of the world's first UNESCO pentalateral biosphere reserve, Mura–Drava–Danube, in 2021. Exploring by excursion boat through channels like Čonakut and the Hulovo Channel is pure magic.
