The Eye of the Earth – A Unique Place in Croatia

At first glance, it looks almost unreal. A round pool of crystal-clear blue water, hidden beneath the mighty Dinara mountain, so perfectly shaped that from above it looks exactly like a giant eye. This is the source of the Cetina River, and honestly, it's one of the most fascinating natural wonders I've encountered anywhere in Croatia.

Before you plan your visit, there's one important thing to know—there's no public transport that brings you here. You'll need a car, so if you're staying on the coast like I was, renting one is definitely the best option. But trust me, the drive through this dramatic landscape is part of the experience.

The spring itself plunges over 100 meters deep, though nobody knows its exact depth. There's a mysterious system of underground caves and tunnels beneath, still mostly unexplored. The incredible blue and green colors come from the way sunlight penetrates the crystal-clear water, creating this mesmerizing illusion of a giant eye staring back into the sky. Most photos you've seen were taken by drone—that's the best way to appreciate its shape—but even from the small hills around the spring, you can catch a surprisingly good glimpse.

Just a short walk away stands the remains of the Church of Holy Salvation, built in the 9th century and considered one of the oldest preserved Croatian churches. Together with the medieval cemetery beside it, this creates one of Croatia's most unique historical sites, adding another magical layer to an already extraordinary place.
