Lake Lokve

Tucked away in the lush coniferous forests of Gorski Kotar, Lake Lokve is one of Croatia's most enchanting hidden gems. This artificial lake was created in 1954 when a dam was built on the Lokvarka river, transforming a green valley into a mesmerizing body of turquoise water reaching depths of 40 metres. The flooded valley holds secrets beneath its surface—including the old Emperor's Bridge from the historic Louisiana road, which mysteriously emerges when water levels drop.

Despite its man-made origins, Lake Lokve blends so seamlessly into its natural surroundings that you'd never guess it wasn't always here. The lake has become a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts, hosting everything from the first Underwater Orienteering World Championship to international rowing regattas. Each year, the traditional POJ and BOJ events bring together hikers and cyclists who circle the lake's scenic 17-kilometre forest trail.

If you're an angler, you'll be thrilled to know this is where the world's largest river trout was caught—a whopping 25.40 kilogrammes! The waters teem with chub, carp, and trout, making it a fishing paradise. For a more leisurely experience, hop aboard the charming Čača raft, which ferries visitors between Lokve and Mrzla Vodica.
